This work presents the possibilities of using BGP routing protocol to achieve high availability of Internet services in data centers. Autonomous systems and relevant characteristics of BGP protocol are described. Two ways in which it is possible to achieve high availability of Web services by using BGP protocol are shown in laboratory conditions. One of the ways is AS-PATH prepend which allows for better flexibility and independence from Internet Service Providers. The other method is Multi-exit discriminator (MED). Simulation shows topology of a network of a fictional HVB bank and its web service on primary and secondary site, which are connected to the Internet using one Internet Service Provider. Scenario of unavailability of primary site and availability of service at the transfer to secondary site is elaborated. Simulation is done in laboratory conditions using GNS3 system with Cisco routers. The way of achieving rapid convergence of the network after the primary site becomes unavailable is also elaborated, so that the Internet application could be available shortly after the transfer to the secondary site. Configurations of routers are shown, and the meanings of the important parts of BGP configuration are described. Real condition of BGP routing tables at normal functioning of the system, as well as at transfer to the secondary site are shown.
