Abstract
Svrha ovog rada jest raspraviti o izazovima s kojima se suočavaju novi autori koji ulaze u svijet online komedije i predložiti rješenje koje bi im omogućilo da vrlo rano uđu u “magični krug uspjeha”. U radu je naglasak stavljen na neovisne autore jer predstavljaju ogroman potencijal u budućnosti industrije. U sadržaju ovog rada koristi se izraz ekranizirana zabava (eng. screen entertainment). Pri tome se misli na audiovizualne formate zabave koje su tradicionalno predstavljali filmovi i TV serije ali su u međuvremenu prošli kroz transformaciju u eri internetske zabave, u kojoj su formati postali mnogo nejasniji. Prema tome, iako će se u radu koristiti poučke iz traditionalne filmske i TV industrije, uvažava se da je ekranizirana zabava mnogo fluidnija i raznolikija. Nadalje, koristi se ovaj izraz u svrhu razlikovanja od drugih oblika internetske zabave, poput računalnih igara. U radu će se najprije predstaviti problem i proći kroz pregled industrije, kako bi se istaknuli postojeći poslovne modele i izazove koje oni predstavljaju. Zatim će biti predstavljen pregled postojećih metoda koje se trenutno koriste u industriji ekranizirane zabave. Nakon toga će se na temelju svih zaključaka prioritizirati rješenja koja su potencijalno najkorisnika neovisnim autorima. Prijedlog koncepta inspiriran Lean startup metodologijom bit će predstavlje u centranom dijelu rada, a u kojem će se ranim fazama komedije pristupati na sličan način na koji se pristupa ranim fazama startup kompanija pristupa korištenjem Lean metodologije: predstavljanjem sadržaja sa upravo onoliko svojstava (ili kvalitete) koliko je potrebno da se analizira i testira potencijal tržišta. Kada prijedlog jednom bude oblikovan, istraživanje će se fokusirati na industriju komedija, kako bi se suzilo područje na oblik zabave s najvišom raziom strukture. U okviru rada bit će priprmljen prototip te biti provedeni razgovori sa nekoliko profesionalaca iz ove industrije, kako bi se prikupile povratne informacije i prisnažio konačni prijedlog koncepta. Na temelju povratnih informacija, provest će se dodatna istraživanja s cijem razumijevanja izazova i potencijalnih rješenja. U zaključku će biti predloženi koraci razvoja Lean entertainment modela te načini i kako bi se predloženi pristup mogao uklopiti u širi poslovni eko-sustav, sa svim izazovima koji su opisani i otkriveni tijekom istraživanja.
Abstract (english)
Purpose of this thesis is to discuss challenges that new entrants face when entering online comedy business and propose a solution that would enable them to enter a “virtuous cycle of success” very early on. We focus on these independent creators as they represent an enormous potential in future of the industry. Throughout the thesis we use the term screen entertainment. We employ this term to refer to audiovisual entertainment formats that were traditionally represented by movies and TV series, but have since gone through a transformation in the era of online entertainment, where format boundaries have become blurred. Therefore, while we are using many learnings from traditional movie and TV, we acknowledge that the online screen entertainment is much more fluid and diverse. Furthermore, we use this term to differentiate from other forms of online entertainment, namely computer games. In the thesis, we first present the problem and run an overview of industry history in order to highlight existing business models and challenges they represent. Next, we provide an overview of existing methods already used in screen entertainment industries. Then, based on all the learnings we attempt to prioritize which solutions might be most beneficial to independent creators. We propose a concept inspired by Lean methodology, in which we approach early stage comedy in a similar fashion one might approach early stage startup companies using the Lean methodology: by introducing content with just enough features (or qualities) to analyze and test the market potential. Once we draw out a proposal, we focus on comedy industry, in order to narrow our research to the most structured form of entertainment. We prepare a prototype and conduct interviews with several industry professionals in order to collect feedback on the proposed concept. Based on their inputs, we perform additional studies in order to understand the challenges and potential solutions. In conclusion, we propose the next steps for development of Lean entertainment model and how it might fit into a wider business eco-system, as well as acknowledge the challenges discovered during the research.
