Abstract
U doba kada je najveća vrijednost svake tvrtke informacija vrlo često dolazimo do točke kada želimo osigurati dostupnost podataka svim zainteresiranim stranama. U prošlosti su sustavi koji omogućavaju visoku dostupnost bili glomazni, kompleksni i prije svega izuzetno skupi, što je za direktnu posljedicu imalo mali broj implementacija. Težnja za boljom iskoristivosti sustava značajno je doprinijela razvoju virtualizacijskih tehnologija, kojima danas ostvarujemo značajne uštede pri nabavi poslužiteljske opreme, a samim time i svih popratnih resursa kao što su prostor u poslužiteljskom ormaru, struja, hlađenje i održavanje. Snaga današnjeg hardvera omogućava nam da velik broj virtualnih poslužitelja stavimo na jedan fizički poslužitelj (eng. Server). Sa financijske strane to je odlično, jer odjednom imamo nekoliko desetaka poslužitelja na jednom komadu hardvera. Ušteda korištenjem takvog pristupa je izuzetno velika, no takav pristup je loš jer se izlažemo gubitku velikog broja poslužitelja i servisa sa kvarom jednog komada hardvera. Premda je tehnologija izrade poslužiteljskog hardvera na vrlo visokom nivou, kvarovi se događaju i neizbježni su, stoga uvijek trebamo razmišljati o minimalno dva fizička poslužitelja kada govorimo o virtualizaciji. S obzirom na klasični pristup i dalje ostvarujemo velike uštede. Sa dva fizička poslužitelja se donekle osiguravamo od kvara u točci hardvera i samo smo korak od kreiranja grozda (eng. Cluster1) koji kao preduvjet zahtjeva dijeljeni diskovni prostor za pohranu podataka (eng. Shared Storage2). Ostvarene uštede korištenjem virtualizacijske tehnologije omogućavaju nam da za razliku u novcu osiguramo veću dostupnost podataka, što je od posebno velike važnosti u okruženjima u kojima moramo poštivati dogovorene razine dostupnosti servisa (eng. SLA3). Napretkom tehnologije sustavi za pohranu podataka postali su pristupačniji korisnicima i korisnici se sve češće odlučuju za taj dodatni korak - implementaciju sustava koji osiguravaju visok nivo dostupnosti podataka.
Abstract (english)
In today’s age, when information is the most valuable resource of every company, we often get to the point where we want to ensure data availability to all interested parties. In the past systems enabling high availability were huge, complex and above all highly expensive, which was the main reason for low implementation count. The need for better systems utilization greatly contributed to development of virtualization technologies. Today these technologies allow us to achieve great savings when purchasing server hardware, and with that also all the related resources like rack space, power, cooling and maintenance. Today’s hardware is so powerful that it allows us to create a large amount of virtual servers on a single piece of server hardware. Using that approach is giving us great savings but that approach is bad because we’re risking the loss of large amount of servers and services to a single point of failure – server hardware. Even though build quality of server hardware is high, malfunctions do happen and they’re inevitable, so we always have to think about at least two physical servers when talking about virtualization. Compared to classic approach savings are still big. With two physical servers we’re somewhat safe from a single point of failure on hardware level, and we’re just a step away from creating a cluster, which has a shared storage as main prerequisite. Savings made with usage of virtualization technologies allow us to increase data availability which is of great importance in environments where we have to ensure availability based on a service level agreement. With the advancement of technology, storage systems became more affordable and companies often decide to take that extra step – implement a highly available system to ensure data availability. Since we’re still talking about a significant investment, it is of great importance to approach those implementations with caution, using project management best practices.
